Performa 640CD
DOS Compatible
Historical Context
The Performa 640CD DOS Compatible captures one of Apple’s more unusual mid-1990s experiments: giving home users a Macintosh that could also run DOS software through a built-in PC compatibility card. Sold through the Performa consumer channel and bundled as a family-oriented package, it reflects both Apple’s push into mainstream retail and the company’s attempt to make the Mac more practical in a world where PC software still mattered to many buyers.

Detailed Observations

The Story
Very nice Performa 640 with the DOS Compatble card inside (and DOS Compatible naming on case). Replaced CPU and applied fresh thermal paste and successfully tested running DOS and Windows 3.1. Really nice machine for running classic Mac OS and early DOS / Windows. I prefer it to the later Houdini II cards that require a hard to find octopus cable to work. DOS video is sent out through the standard Mac DA-15 port.
